Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Tests

Understanding your hearing profile starts with an accurate, medical-grade audiological examination. Our testing processes are comfortable, thorough, and highly informative.

What Happens During a Hearing Exam?

A clinical hearing evaluation is a non-invasive, comfortable process lasting about 45 to 60 minutes. Rather than a simple beep screening, our doctor-led evaluations investigate the health of your physical ear and your brain's cognitive processing of sound.

1. Visual Otoscopy

We examine your ear canals with a high-definition digital otoscope to check for structural changes, ear wax blockage, or middle ear abnormalities.

2. Pure-Tone Audiometry

Sitting in our comfortable sound-isolation chamber, you'll listen to tones across different frequencies. This charts the absolute quietest sounds you can hear, identifying high-frequency or low-frequency gaps.

3. Speech-In-Noise Testing

We measure your ability to hear and repeat words with background crowd noise, checking how your auditory nerve processes complex conversations.

4. Tympanometry

A gentle pressure test checks the flexibility of your eardrum and functions of the middle ear space (ruling out fluid, pressure, or congestion issues).

Why a Baseline Test is Crucial

Hearing loss is gradual and often goes unnoticed by the individual. A formal audiogram establishes a baseline of your neural hearing sensitivity, allowing us to:

  • Determine if hearing difficulties are caused by temporary wax, middle ear fluid, or permanent nerve-level change.
  • Provide a reference point to detect and map subtle shifts in high frequencies over time.
  • Identify cognitive fatigue patterns (the brain straining to fill communication blanks).
  • Offer early intervention to protect your auditory cortex from progressive auditory deprivation.

Hearing Test FAQ

Common questions about clinical diagnostic testing.

Not at all. The entire evaluation is completely non-invasive and painless. It involves visual inspection of the ear canal and listening to sounds and speech through soft, comfortable headphones in a quiet environment.

If you are over 50, we recommend a baseline check and follow-up checks every 2-3 years. If you already have documented hearing difficulties, use hearing aids, or work in noisy environments, annual diagnostic exams are highly recommended to track shifts.

Yes, in many cases. Diagnostic hearing tests ordered by a physician for the purpose of medical diagnosis are typically covered by Medicare and major commercial insurers. Our office team helps verify your coverage benefits before your appointment.
